  Nitrous oxide is a gas that is used to relax patients who experience treatment anxiety.  While using nitrous oxide, patients remain awake, responsive and breathe on their own.  It is administered through a “gas mask”  While patients are inhaling the nitrous oxide/oxygen mix, they may experience tingling in their hands and feet, which is normal.  When the dental procedure is finished, the patient breathes pure oxygen for a few minutes until the effects of the nitrous oxide subside.
